Microsoft (MSFT) Gains on Next-Gen Xbox Debut Rumors

June 27, 2011 10:04 AM EDT
Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is expected to debut it's next-generation Xbox gaming console nearly seven years following the Xbox 360.

According to BoyGeniusReport, a source has confirmed to them that Microsoft will debut the next Xbox at E3 2012 in L.A.

Launch plans for the new device haven't been hammered out yet.

BoyGeniusReport notes that the next Xbox has been in development since 2006, closely following the November 2005 launch of Xbox 360.

The report says that Microsoft has sold nearly 54.4 million Xbox 360 units worldwide since its launch.

Critics and analysts of the stock have increasingly pegged the Xbox as one of the few diversions from Windows that has ended up being successful. Many say that the next version will not focus solely on gaming, but rather act as an entertainment and social networking hub for the entire house.

The news follows reports that Microsoft will launch its new Windows 8 OS in 2012, leading to a rumored changing of the guards to the top, making it potentially one of the biggest years for Microsoft and it's investors.

Shares of Microsoft are up 1.6 percent on the session.
