Although Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) maybe behind in the tablet market, the company controlled about 40 percent of the videogame industry during 2011. This marked the twelfth straight month Microsoft has lead the industry in sales.

The sector as a whole produced $17.02 billion in sales during 2011, representing an 8 percent decline when compared to 2010. Microsoft’s Xbox counsel generated $2.1 billion in sales while games for the counsel generated $4.6 billion.

December sales in the gaming industry only accounted for 23 percent of total sales in 2011, below its ten-year average of 28 percent. This goes inline with analysts who were expecting retail sales to be abnormally weak this past holiday season.

Microsoft stated sales of its Xbox council outpaced Sony’s (NYSE: SNE) PlayStation by 2.7 million units in December. Sony sold 6.5 million PlayStation units worldwide throughout the holiday season, according to AllThingsD. Sony did experience a 5 percent increase in gaming sales across all categories in 2011, while Nintendo’s Wii saw a decline.

The company continues to see strong growth in the video game industry as the number of hours recorded on Xbox LIVE increased 140 percent from 2010 to 2011. People are also including the gaming counsel more general in everyday activities: 60 percent of U.S. Xbox LIVE Gold members used entertainment apps on Xbox LIVE – an average of an hour a day each.

The top five games which drove sales over December include:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 by Activision Blizzard (Nasdaq: ATVI)

  • Just Dance 3 by Ubisoft.

  • Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim by Bethesda Softworks.

  • Mario Kart 7 for 3DS by Nintendo.

  • Battlefield 3 by Electronic Arts (NYSE: EA)
