Microsoft (MSFT) Cut the Price of Its Surface RT (Kind of...)

Starting today, purchasing Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Surface RT tablet just made a little more fiscal sense.

According to the Official Surface Blog, customers in the U.S. and Canada purchasing a Surface RT will receive a Touch Cover for free. While that doesn't sound like all that big of a deal, the cover itself generally adds $119 to the price of the tablet ($100 when included with purchase) and really enhances the overall experience.

The Surface RT starts at $499 for 32-GB and goes to $599 for 65-GB of memory.

Consumers will only have until the end of June to capture the savings, Microsoft noted.

It's not clear whether or not Microsoft is running this deal to clear out inventory ahead of a product refresh, but that sort of thing is largely expected in the tech community. Reports earlier this year had Microsoft planning to release a smaller form-factored Surface tablet to compete more wholly with Amazon, Google, Apple, and others.

Shares of Microsoft are up 0.6 percent on the session.
