Microsoft (MSFT) Confident in Surface Tablet; Plans Multi-Million Unit Launch

Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) has a ton of faith in its Surface tablet lineup.

In fact, the Redmond, WA-based software giant is ordering about 3 million units for the launch, which is expected sometime in October 2012. Data comes from IDC.

Initially, Microsoft was looking to sell the tablets via is Microsoft Stores as well as select online retailers. However, one IDC analyst believes that, given the expected volume, that plan wouldn't be feasible.

In addition, the analyst thinks that the Surface might sell for either a flat rate, or the new method of offering a discount, but only if certain subscription commitments are met.

But, Microsoft doesn't want to dissolve relationships with its partners. Pricing will likely be more competitive, as Microsoft would rather take a Google (Nasdaq: GOOG)-like approach and simply get the software out there. Last time anyone checked, Microsoft isn't looking to go big in the hardware segment anytime soon.

Ahead of the bell, Microsoft shares are indicated higher.
