Microsoft (MSFT) Adds 'How-Old' Technology to Bing Image Search Results

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is adding facial recognition to its Bing search engine as it looks to take additional search market share from leviathan Google (Nasdaq: GOOG)(Nasdaq: GOOGL).

According to VentureBeat, Bing will attempt to determine the gender and age of a person that appears in its image search results. You can click on an image and, on some of the images anyway, a grey box pops up in the middle which you can click on that reads "#HowOldRobot."

The technology was first demonstrated at Microsoft's Build conference in April and has been met with a slew of humorous jokes, particularly when it gauges a toddler as being in his mid-30s. But, as more people continue to use the service, it's likely to see vast improvements.

Microsoft also has a How-Old app that can be used on mobile devices.

It's not clear what Microsoft might use the technology for, though there are a series of different areas where facial recognition can be useful, from security to photo tagging.
