Microsoft (MSFT): 'Windows 8 is Selling Just Fine, Thanks'

May 7, 2013 9:11 AM EDT
Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows 8 has been met with mixed reviews, but sales numbers don't lie.

According to Microsoft's Chief Marketing Officer Tami Reller, about 100 million Windows 8 licenses have been sold since launch six months ago. The number is up from 60 million reported last January.

TheNextWeb points out today that sales are in-line with Microsoft's decidedly more-popular operating system, Windows 7. Launched in October 2009, Windows 7 sold 100 million licenses by April 2010. That's 193 days for Windows 8 versus 160 days for Windows 7. If Microsoft revealed the numbers with its quarterly report, it would have been somewhere around 153 days.

Still, 100 million is a strong number and reinforces that Microsoft will sell Windows regardless of knee-jerk reactions from the media.

Other recent data from Net Applications points to Windows 8 occupying just 3.8 percent of the global OS market in April 2013, versus 44.7 percent for Windows 7.

Microsoft is lower in early trading after gaining 0.8 percent Monday.
