While Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) has been working diligently to update Windows 8 for a better user experience, the operating system might have a short wile left before its successor takes over.
WinSuperSite said recently that it believes Microsoft's Windows 9 platform will become available in April 2015. News comes as the company recently released Windows 8.1 as an update to Windows 8. But, the update has still left many users with complaints.
Windows 8 eschewed the traditional desktop layout many were familiar with for a "tiled" layout, which Microsoft hoped would get more users used to working with handheld devices as the layout is akin to what is available via the Windows Phone mobile operating system. Users attempting to run Windows 8 with a mouse and keyboard have found the system confusing.
Thus, Windows 8.1 is only in use with about 25 million PCs, despite Microsoft saying in previous quarterly announcements that it sold 100 million licenses.
Windows 9 is expected to be similar to Windows 8, but drop the Windows 8 name completely. The goal will be to strike a better balance between traditional PC and mobile device (tablet, smartphone) users.
