Microsft (Nasdaq: MSFT) appears to going into desperate mode. According to a release Thursday, students (with valid ID at participating locations) will be able to snag a 4GB version of the Xbox 360 gaming console with the purchase of a new Windows 7-based PC.
The minimum price of the PC is $699. No word on whether a specific manufacturer is tied to the deal, though on Microsoft's blog the company recommended Hewlett-Packard's (NYSE: HPQ) Pavillion DM4 or Samsung's Series 9 laptop
Humorously, Microsoft's general manager of Windows Marketing claims, "In one shot, with this great offer, Microsoft is giving students everything they need for a successful new school year."
We're still unclear as to how an Xbox will help you succeed in school. Stress relief? Something to do while skipping class? Half of a set of sweet book-ends?
Either way, the deal starts on May 22nd and runs though September 3rd, 2011.
Does this mean that Microsoft is making an effort to move more PCs, which have lagged in the face of strong tablet competition, or is it an effort to move Xboxes on a new product refresh? Given that PC sales have lagged, and the Xbox 360 has been around since late 2005, both are plausible scenarios.
