Shares of Mentor (Nasdaq: MENT) are seeing upside action today following a positive Barron's article this weekend, which said the chip software company may be insulated from the semiconductor slump. Shares are up 9.7% currently.
Barron's said shares of Mentor, which makes sophisticated software used to design and test chips, could rebound sharply, along with profits. Barron's said EPS could rise to $0.60 per share in 2010/2011 which could translate into a 30% run-up in the stock in the next 12 months, to about $10.
Because Mentor's products are used by companies research-and-development divisions, not operations, sales may hold up better as chip makers are loath to cut R&D. Most clients will continue to buy Mentor software to create the new chips that will power the electronic products ahead of an economic recovery.
