McDonald's (MCD) McFalafel Flops in Key Market...Israel

McDonald's just doesn't get Israel.

According to the U.K.'s Guardian, McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) is withdrawing it's aptly-named McFalafel from menu's around Israel.

Restaurants in the area will continue to serve staples of hamburgers and french fries. Though attempting a vegetarian dish is amiable, sometimes it just doesn't work out.

The Guardian noted that an Israeli McDonald's store manger said they "occasionally" served a McFalafel (real name); burgers sold more readily. Around the corner, a falafel place jam-packed with patrons nearly crawling over themselves to get at that delicious chickpea concoction.

McDonald's Israel CEO Omri Padan commented, "We realized that falafel doesn't belong in McDonald's."

Bold words from the world's largest fast food chain. More unconvincingly, the owner of the small falafel shop admitted to trying the McDonald's dish...after all, it's best to know your competitor and it's weaknesses. After one bite of the faux local delicacy, what did the owner say? Did he spit it out? Curse the heavens for making him eat such a catastrophe of a sandwich? Rip his clothing is disgust that this national chain dare enter his neighborhood, a place he grew up in, started a business, and decided to raise his own family in, and try to outdo him in the one venture that has brought him more success than he could possibly imagine? No.

"I don't know," said 'Doron,' the cafe owner, on whether the chain falafel is better than his. ""McDonald's is McDonald's."

Hmm.

Well, admitting defeat is never easy, and it takes quite a brand to cave. Now, if they could just do something about those burgers...
