It's hard to remember a time when video streaming on the Internet was not a part of daily life, as YouTube and the like have infested the Web with anything and everything the user could want to see in an instant. Now instant video streaming, still only a fraction of the market, is making strong inroads.
According to comScore, the use of live streaming video over the Internet has jumped 600 percent in the last year.
According to a report from comScore's Andres Palmiter on Friday, the amount of time Americans spend watching Internet video from popular publishers (Justin.tv, USTREAM, Livestream, LiveVideo, and Stickam) jumped 648 percent to 1.4 billion minutes over the past year. The amount of time users have spent watching YouTube in the same time has jumped 68 percent.
“Live online video sites have not only been successful in building audience, but also in keeping that audience tuned-in,” Palmiter wrote. "Even without the same brand recognition as other portals and publishers, live video sites are able to retain viewers' attention and deliver desirable audiences for advertisers."
The report said that USTREAM reached more than 3.2 million unique users, while Justin.tv and Livestream reached 2.6 million and 2.4 million respectively.
Streaming video is now moving from the restraints of the computer, and is now a staple on smart phones and tablet computers like Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPad.
Now Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) is trying to bring Internet video to the living room with its Google TV that will bring all the Internet has to offer to the television. Apple also announced its latest Apple TV this week which will have similar functionality.
"As live-streaming technology moves more mainstream, I believe content creators will increasingly realize the importance of mirroring their live TV strategy with live online video as well," Palmiter wrote.
