LinkedIn (LNKD) Sends Email Hinting at Breached Account

August 22, 2014 2:46 PM EDT

Is LinkedIn (NYSE: LNKD) trying to reinvigorate user activity?

Your author hasn't logged into their LinkedIn account for a fairly long amount of time...say, nine months to a year. He does get email from the site at least three times a week reminding about a connection or seeing if there are people on the site that might be familiar. While some might be genuine, others appear to be more marketing oriented.

The following was received today from LinkedIn. It indicates needing to perform a password reset in order to unlock an account. While we're not adamant users of the site, it might be one way for LinkedIn to get users to log back on after months of inactivity. Or, the company might actually be experiencing a problem.

Having been a free member of LinkedIn for some time, this is the first time something like this has appeared in our inbox. Shares of LinkedIn are up 3 percent.

UPDATE: LinkedIn reached out to us and said the email is the result of their regular security practices. "We regularly monitor our site and the Internet to keep the account information of our members safe, including scanning for posts of username and password combinations by hackers. When we uncover these types of posts we compare the information to the credentials in our systems. Where we find matches we invalidate the password for the account and then email the member a prompt to update their password."
