Leap (LEAP), MetroPCS (PCS) Gaming for AT&T's (T) Attention?

January 5, 2012 10:22 AM EST
Leap Wireless (Nasdaq: LEAP) ad MetroPCS (NYSE: PCS) may be displaying their plumage peacock-style in order to attract attention from AT&T (NYSE: T).

How's that? Well, besides quarterly reports -- which don't generally appear on the same day, but are close -- you never really see Leap or PCS simply toss out subscriber numbers early. That changed late-Wednesday, with both updating on fourth-quarter numbers.

Here's the numbers:
  • Leap added 175,000 gross subs in the fourth-quarter of 2011; and

  • PCS said it added 1.22 million gross subs, subject to adjustment. PCS noted the number was 7 percent above one reported in the same period last year.
With AT&T filing to get approval from regulators over the T-Mobile acquisition, its still looking to expand its network reach one way or another.

Just last week, JPMorgan also mulled the possibility of AT&T gunning for the duo.

Both Leap and PCS are down pretty good Thursday, 7.9 percent and 8.5 percent, respectively, although they are up huge on the week.
