Launch of Nokia's (NOK) Next Flagship Device Nears

March 26, 2012 9:04 AM EDT
Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is looking stronger pre-market Monday following reports its next Lumia device will be hitting consumer hands very soon.

According to CNET, which cites a source from AT&T (NYSE: T), the carrier will begin selling Nokia's Lumia 900 smartphone on April 8th for a starting price of $99.99 (with a two-year contract).

The Lumia is 4G compatible and runs Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phones (WP) OS. Nokia's Lumia 710 and 800 also ran WP, but did so on a 3G network.

At just under $100, AT&T said it is one of the most affordable flagship phones it has ever sold. For comparison, AT&T is offering-up Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone 4G with 8-gigabytes of memory for $99.99, whereas the newer 4S model starts at $199.99 with a contract...several months after its initial debut.

CNET lists some of the Lumia 900s features: "a 4.3-inch ClearBlack Amoled display, an 8-megapixel Carl Zeiss camera lens, and a higher capacity 1830 mAh battery." The device will debut in black or cyan blue, with a white version expected on April 22nd.

Along with AT&T, the Lumia 900 will be carried by T-Mobile. Both Sprint (NYSE: S) and Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) have not indicated intention to carry the Lumia yet.

Specific sales for the Lumia 710 and 800 versions weren't released by Nokia, but CNET said it needs a stronger push to move from its fourth-place spot in the U.S. market. The Lumia series is designed to attract a slew of value-oriented consumers who would like a smartphone but have balked at the cost. To be sure, there's still plenty of them left in the U.S.

Shares of Nokia are up well over 1 percent early Monday.
