Consumers have officially adopted LED back-lighting technology for LCD televisions, according to IHS, Inc.'s (NYSE: IHS) iSuppli.

According to the research, 19.6% of TV purchase in Q310 were LED back-lit, a staggering jump from just 4% in Q309.

iSuppli notes that the majority of U.S. consumers continued to buy non-LED TVs through the quarter, increasing from 64.6% in Q210 to 65.3%.

TV sales seeing a decline include plasma (to 13.5% from 14.2%), rear-projection, and tube-types (down to 0.9% and 0.7%, respectively).

Also on the rise is TV connecting to the Internet. iSuppli reports that 50% of consumers buying a TV got one with an option for built-in Internet connectivity.

The most favored TV LCD TV size? In the 40- to 49-inch range. 42-inch was the preferred size for plasmas (though, for these numbers, one would assume that "preferred" refers to "fits in budget").

Vizio dominated at Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) and other club stores, whereas Samsung was the leader elsewhere.

Names to watch as LED becomes further adapted include:
  • Cree Inc.
    (Nasdaq: CREE);

  • Veeco Instruments Inc. (Nasdaq: VECO); and

  • Rubicon Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: RBCN).
