June Becomes More Miserable than May

July 19, 2011 10:16 AM EDT
Get cut off on the way to work today? Receive a sneer from your local coffee shop barista when you pointed out that you "asked for soy, not non-fat skim?" Did a chill run down your spine at any time from 7 to 9 am this morning?

Congratulations, you're more miserable. Now get to the back of the line.

According to misery index.us, the latest mark is at 12.76, the highest point it's been since May of 1983. That's 28 years, folks.

So, all you kids hoping for a retro comeback, you win. Now go figure out what a cassette is while you scour your local salvation army for neon spandex and in-line skates.

The index is a simple combination of the unemployment rate for the month, plus the latest inflation figures from the Fed. This month (June), the unemployment rate came in at 9.2 percent, while inflation curbed slightly to 3.56 percent.

Enjoy your day!
