The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits fell last week, as the labor market shows glimpses of strength heading into the second quarter.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that jobless claims fell by 6,000 to 388,000 in the week ended March 26, following a drop to 382,000 in the previous week.

Economists had estimated jobless claims to fall farther to 380,000 last week. Estimates ranged from 370,000 to 390,000.

The four-week moving average, which is less volatile, rose to 394,250 last week.

The report comes ahead of the highly-monitored non-farm payroll numbers from the government on Friday, which is expected to show no change to the 8.9 percent unemployment rate.
