Japanese Automakers Issue Mass Recall Over Faulty Airbags

April 11, 2013 7:24 AM EDT
Toyota (NYSE: TM) is ticking higher early Thursday amid news of another recall by the Japanese automaker, mainly because the issue isn't a company-specific one.

According to reports, Toyota will be recalling about 1.73 million vehicles made between 2000 and 2004. Models include the popular Corolla, Tundra, Yaris and Camry. About 580,000 vehicles sold in North America will meet specifications, as will 490,000 units sold in Europe.

The recall has to do with airbags produced by Takata Corp between 2000 and 2002.

Nissan was hit by the same problem, issuing a recall on 480,000 vehicles. Models include the Maxima and Cube.

Mazada will recall 45,500 vehicles.

Honda Motor (NYSE: HMC) had the same issue, recalling 1.14 million, including its hot-selling Civic model.

In total, some 3.4 million vehicles are said to be included in the recall. By comparison, total U.S. auto sales are expected to be 14 million to 15 million units in 2013.

No reports of injury or death have come in due to the airbags, Reuters noted Thursday.

Shares of Toyota are up 2.5 percent.
