Sony (NYSE: SNE) shares are trading lower ahead of the bell today, down about 1.3%.

The company is reportedly keeping six of their manufacturing plants in Japan shut until further determinations can be made about an appropriate time to reopen the facilities in a safe manner. The Tokyo, Japan-based electronics giant initially stated on March 14 th that "several Sony Corporation and Sony Group sites and facilities have been affected by the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake and tsunami," and "Sony is monitoring the status of each of these sites on an on-going basis." Eight total facilities were closed at the time.

Shut down plants manufacture various devices and components for Sony, including Blu-ray discs and lithium-ion batteries.

According to the WSJ, a spokesperson for Sony said that they have safely evacuated staff at the six closed facilities. Tow facilities, in Kuki and Ibaraki, have either resumed or partially resumed production.
