Earlier, FBR commented on the impact the highly-anticipated iPhone 5 will have on various chip suppliers. While interesting on many levels, traders have a keen focus on one situation - NXP Semiconductors NV (Nasdaq: NXPI).
NXP Semiconductors is the leader in chips for near field communication (NFC), or the technology that allows mobile payments with a swipe of a phone or other device.
Speculation has been abound for years that Apple would introduce NFC functionality in earlier versions of the iPhone, but too date those hopes have been dashed. Now though - with the iPhone 5 - the predictions may finally come to fruition.
"We think the iPhone 5 will feature some sort of payment processing functionality, with near field communication technology the leading candidate, though with uncertainty remaining here," stated FBR analyst Craig Berger.
The adoption by Apple of NFC technology would likely contribute to rapid adoption by vendors and others of the technology and could prove to be a mega-boon for NXP. That said, what makes the situation 'tradable' is that the tight-lipped Apple is not saying if they will include the technology into the iPhone 5. Heck, even the date of the new iPhone has not been announced yet - although many expect it will be September 12th.
Shares of NXP are up 1.6 percent today.
