According to a report from research firm iSuppli, Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE: AMD) maintained their market share in the second quarter, as the microprocessor industry experienced rapid growth.
The total global microprocessor market in the second quarter rose 34 percent from the same time last year, reflecting the dramatic recovery in the personal computer market from the weak conditions last year. At this point last year Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) was phasing out its Windows Vista operating system and getting ready for the launch of Windows 7.
"While market and technology conditions have changed dramatically during the past 12 months, the high level of competition between Intel and AMD has not," said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst for computer platforms research at iSuppli. "As circumstances continue to evolve in the second half of 2010, expect these two companies to maintain their epic competitive struggle."
Intel accounted for 80.4 percent of worldwide microprocessor revenue, down from 80.7 percent in the same quarter last year. Intel edged up sequentially from it 80.3 percent market share in the first quarter of 2010.
AMD accounted for 11.52 percent of the microprocessor market in the second quarter, up 0.04 points from last year. AMD’s market share was down in the second quarter from the first quarter by 0.2 points.
"The static market share situation might suggest that the second quarter was an uneventful quarter in terms of the competition between the two dominant microprocessor suppliers of Intel and AMD," Wilkins noted. "However, with the market undergoing rapid growth and fast technological development, the fact that the companies have largely retained their positions indicates they are competing furiously for every tenth of a point of market share."
Shares of Intel are down 6 cents to $18.68 in midday market movement on Wednesday, while shares of AMD are down 5 cents to $6.22.
