Intel (INTC) Not Giving Up on MeeGo Amid Nokia (NOK) Decision

February 11, 2011 9:50 AM EST
Amid comments made by Nokia (NYSE: NOK), Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) said that they are not giving up on their MeeGo platform.

Nokia issued a press release, with an altered focus for the future. In the release, Nokia said: "Under the new strategy, MeeGo becomes an open-source, mobile operating system project. MeeGo will place increased emphasis on longer-term market exploration of next-generation devices, platforms and user experiences." Though they continue that they will still be releasing a MeeGo device, the implication from the statement is that it will be more of a learning tool for Nokia.

In a statement today, Intel said that they were "disappointed with Nokia’s decision," but they are "not blinking on MeeGo." Intel continues that "strategy has always been to provide choice when it comes to operating systems, a strategy that includes Windows, Android, and MeeGo. This is not changing."

They also emphasized that MeeGo isn't just a phone OS, but it works across multiple devices.

Nokia shares are down markedly today, about 12.4%, following the announcement of a deal with Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT). Intel is off about 1% as well.
