Intel (INTC) Acquires Smartphone/Tablet SoC Design Company ZiiLabs for $50M

November 21, 2012 9:18 AM EST
Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) made a small acquisition recently as it looks to move further into the smartphone/tablet chipset segment.

Reports Wednesday have Intel dishing out $50 million to acquire U.K.-based ZiiLabs from Creative Technologies.

According to TheInquirer.com: "Ziilabs is a UK based subsidiary of Creative Technology focusing on system on chip (SoC) designs for smartphones and tablets."

Of the total $50 million, about $30 million will be a payment for engineering resources while $20 million will go to patent licensing.

The move comes as Intel works to shift away from Imagination Technology's PowerVR graphics core, which is currently featured in Intel's Atom processors. The shift is expected to happen sometime in 2014.

Shares of Intel are indicated slightly higher Wednesday morning.
