India Presents a Huge Opportunity for Cell Phone Makers
According to research firm iSuppli, nearly every person in India will own a mobile phone by 2014, making the nation’s 1.26 billion people a target for companies like Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: RIMM), Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) and Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) moving forward.
During the first four months of 2010, 19 million new subscribers were added to cell phone contracts in India, pushing the nation’s subscription rate forward rapidly. The report from iSuppli suggests that India’s total wireless subscriptions will reach 766 million by the end of the year, 45.9 percent higher than in 2009.
"Driving the overall growth of wireless subscribers is the expansion of the rural Indian market, where entry-level handsets are most popular,” the report said. “A key trend in 2009 was the shift in focus of service providers and handset manufacturers toward the countryside, which continues to offer significant and untapped market opportunity."
This could be a market for makers of standard cell phone handsets, which are being pressured by the wave of smartphones hitting the market. However, like the U.S., it will only take time for smartphones to penetrate India in force like they have in more developed nations around the world.
