Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) Could Re-Enter Smartphone Market with 'Phablets'

December 24, 2013 8:48 AM EST
To no one's surprise, Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) is looking to re-enter the smartphone market. And the move could be happening soon.

TheInformation said Monday that H-P's first foray back into the mobile market might begin with 6- to 7-inch phablets, or large smartphones.

H-P's last effort into the smartphone market was in 2010 following the acquisition of Palm. However, the onslaught of Android-based devices and more people selecting to use Apple's iPhone proved to be too much of a challenge, even for a company with H-P's size and reach. The initiative ended in 2011 for H-P.

H-P shares are indicated higher in early trading Tuesday.
