Here's At Least One Reason Why RIM (RIMM) Will Stick Around...
...Because it has the unadulterated love of the U.S. government. According to reports out of the Washington Post (WaPo) Thursday, either confidence in RIM's email security or slow bureaucracy are contributing to the government requiring about 500,000 federal workers to stick with their BlackBerry device.
Are the workers happy about this? WaPo says no...many are clamoring to upgrade their device to a device with a larger screen or wider variety of apps. Heaven forbid they should get their own private smartphone.
The WaPo said General Services Administration CIO Casey Coleman believes the U.S. government "appreciates RIM's focus on security."
Further, there would be tremendous costs associated with making a switch -- not just on handsets but the overall IT structure that the government uses.
One downside might be the great BlackBerry exodus; less citizens on the network means federal communications would be easier to spot. But, that's just pure speculation.
Shares of RIM are indicated for a lower open Thursday.
