Evidently, Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) made a solid case for putting itself higher on the PC sales podium, sending shares higher on the session Thursday.

During market hours on Wednesday, research firm Gartner (NYSE: IT) produced new data that HP had fallen from the number one shipper of PCs globally, ceding the spot to Lenovo. In the quarter, HP was said to have a 16.4 percent drop in global PC shipments during the third quarter, while Lenovo shipments grew 9.8 percent. The shift put HP's market share at 15.5 percent, compared with 15.7 percent for Lenovo.

On the data, HP said, "While there are a variety of PC share reports in the market, some don’t measure the market in its entirety. The IDC analysis includes the very important workstation segment and therefore is more comprehensive. In that IDC report, HP occupies the No. 1 position in PCs."

Data from IDC really isn't that much different. The firm said HP's shipments fell 16.4 percent to 13.946 million units, versus 13.55 million units at Gartner.

Prior to the most recent reading, HP held the top spot since 2006.

Notably, Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) retained the third spot in both reports, while Acer and ASUS rounded out the top five in that order as well.

Shares of HP are up about 0.6 percent today.
