Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) is ticking higher early Monday following an announcement that it would be releasing a new Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android-based tablet to take on rivals.
The Slate7 will run on an ARM (Nasdaq: ARMH) Dual Core Cortex-A9 1.6 GHz processor, have a 7-inch display, weigh in at 13 ounces, have 8-gigabytes of memory, Wifi, Bluetooth, and sport a 3-megapixel camera. The company said that Slate7 would debut in April this year with a starting price of $169.
Competition comes in the form of Amazon's (Nasdaq: AMZN) Kindle Fire tablet, Samsung's Note line, Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad mini, as well as Google's own Nexus 7 tablet. Last quarter, IDC said that Apple's iPad mini had about 44 percent of shipments, while Samsung controlled 15 percent with its Note and Tab devices.
H-P has been out of the tablet game since putting the kibosh on its TouchPad device back in 2011. The company recently issued strong Q1 results and guidance for Q213, causing a smile to creep across shareholders' faces. With the Slate7, investors are hoping H-P will be able to regain some of the lost market share in a growing segment like tablets, while moving further away from the consolidating PC segment.
Into the open Monday, H-P shares are up about 1 percent.
