The iPad is still the hottest tablet out there right now, selling millions of units every quarter.
Though competition from Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) and Samsung has caused a little ruckus in several markets, there's no denying that the iPad is still the de facto leader in its segment. However, that may change in 2012
According to data from Digitimes and DisplaySearch on Friday, Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad should move about 65 million of the units in 2012, which is 35.4 percent better than the 48 million estimated to have shipped in 2011.
With the iPad shipping just 17 million units in 2010 -- its debut year -- the jump to 48 million in 2011 is a big one in the order of multitudes. Peers have noticed, and have made big strides through 2011 in both terms of technology and quality. Top it all off with lower prices, and Apple's iPad dominance starts to wane.
Most of the dilution of demand should be expected, and with Apple expected to ship its next generation of iPad sometime toward the end of the first-quarter, and another version mulled for the end of 2012, there's still plenty left in the tank for Apple. Most notably, according to Digitimes , the next generation of iPads will be shipped with QXGA panels, capable of 2,048 by 1,536 pixel resolution. The current models have XGA panels, with resolution of just 1,024 by 769 pixels.
Shares of Apple are indicated higher Friday.
