Greece's Papandreou Wins Confidence Vote

June 21, 2011 6:23 PM EDT
Prime Minister George Papandreou won a vote of confidence with the Greek Parliament late Tuesday, giving the country's new government a better chance to approve austerity measures which are required before further financial aid is given.

The confidence measure was passed in a 155-143 vote, suggesting while support was enough, government officials were not thrilled with the proposed reshuffling.

Next week Papandreou will float a package containing €78 billion ($112 billion) in budget cuts, another proposal which will determine whether foreign officials will offer the rest of financial aid to Greece.

With social unrest extremely prevalent in the country over the last few months, riot crews were positioned in front of Greek Parliament as the vote was conducted. Following the successful confidence vote, news sources have yet to report any kind of turmoil in Athens.
