Google's (GOOG) Schmidt: Micro-who? Our Competition is Apple (AAPL)

To Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) chairman Eric Schmidt, there's only two combatants Google needs to worry about in the ongoing battle for smartphone dominance: Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and itself.
Speaking to AllThingsD last night, Schmidt said the battle between Google and Apple will be the "defining fight" of the industry. So, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) might as well just shelve its Windows Phone operating system and Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) will now be able to save billions in costs related to the launch and maintenance of its upcoming BlackBerry10 operating system
Though Schmidt was once on Apple's board, the rise of Google's Android operating system has vastly strained ties between the two.
Schimdt also got real on China, saying he doesn't expect Google to be a major player there anytime soon. In fact, Schmidt lauded Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) a little bit, saying it would continue to dominate the Chinese market for a long time.
Shares of Google are indicated higher Thursday.
