According to recent research from The Nielsen Company (Nasdaq: NLSN), Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android OS may very well be in the best positioning of all mobile OSs to retain market share and continue growth over the foreseeable future.

Data shows that, though key relationships and solid products out of HTC, Motorola (NYSE: MMI), Samsung, and others, Android has attained a 29% market share in U.S. smartphone usage. Tying for second were Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone iOS, and Research In Motion's (Nasdaq: RIMM) BlackBerry OS.

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) has a 10% share, Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) with a 4% share, and Nokia's (NYSE: NOK) Symbian (all iterations) retains a 2% share in the U.S.

In terms of user age, Android captures the largest market share for the 18 - 24 age group, at 6%. Apple and Android tie for age groups 25 - 34, 35 - 44, and 45 - 54, wth Apple taking the lead at 55 - 64.

So, the combination of capturing the largest, youngest group, and diversifying their OS onto different wares has created pure magic for Android to-date. It will be interesting to see how other OS providers respond to the data going forward.
