Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) will begin encrypting searches globally, according to the Washington Post. The change is expected to affect attempts at censorship in China and around the world. It may also have implications for the NSA.
China, along with Saudi Arabia and Vietnam, have long censored their Internet on a national level and will still have an option to do so. However, routine, granualar filtering will become tougher and governments will have a more difficult time spying on search queries.
Google said global rollout of encrypted searches began last February. The move, some say, might strain ties with China as censorship becomes more difficult.
Shares of Google are up 0.4 percent.
