Ahead of its upcoming IPO, Facebook fans may be 'unliking' this bit of information.
Researchers from IDC believe Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) still poses a "significant threat" to Facebook (Nasdaq: FB)(NYSE: FB) with its Google+ social networking platform.
Though growth may have slowed for Google+ in the last few months (this author is a member, but hasn't touched the thing since getting a pre-launch invite last year), IDC believes Google still has the resources and apps to implement its "social strategies" (which sounds alarmingly like a John Grisham trilogy).
Here's a list of strengths: Google Maps, Android, YouTube, search, shopping, Calendar, Documents, etc. Google has years and years of collecting user data and has continually tailored searches to meet user needs, thereby keeping them coming back for more. It's Maps platform by itself is a little addictive, easily allowing for the waste of an entire Saturday afternoon on exploring the world, taking a virtual walk down the street in your old neighborhood, or going on a preset and completely free photo tour of famous cities and locations.
Developers love this, and IDC says even with Facebook's launch of Open Graph, developers are struggling on how to integrate Facebook's platform into mobile social apps.
Data was made available through the IDC-Appcelerator Mobile Developer Survey. About 2,173 Appcelerator developers worldwide were surveyed.
