Since Street View has become such a great success for the company, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) is now flirting with a similar underwater version.
Google has entered a partnership with the Catlin Group Limited and oceanographers to capture images of the ocean floor and provide them to users screens all around the world. A project of this magnitude has only become possible as of lately thanks to technology advances.
A prototype of the project was launched on Thursday in Singapore called the "Catlin Seaview Survey." The WSJ noted the importance of the project is it allows “scientists to document coral reefs and underwater grassland, as well as track the migration patterns of tiger sharks, sea turtles and manta rays.”
Once the filming and trials have been completed, Google will provide the images on Google Maps and Google Earth. The project will also be broadcast on Google+ Hangouts, where people will have the opportunity to discuss and chat in a group while watching the footage live. Google has also dedicated a YouTube channel for the project.
The first series will cover the Great Barrier Reef and is expected to be completed later this year. Click here to view some of the footage which has already been captured.
