At a press event currently being held, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) has given users and investors its first look at the Chrome OS. Below are some highlights:
- the Chrome browser now has over 40 million users
- sees a Chrome OS device announcement about a "year away"
- Mac and Linux versions of the Chrome browser are coming by year-end
- speed is key to the Chrome OS, but 'simplicity' will also be important
- Chrome OS will have security that is better
- the operating system takes 7 seconds to boot and 3 seconds to log in
- Chrome OS allows views of all open web windows
- Google wants to sell Chrome OS devices by holiday 2010
- aiming to have netbooks with Chrome OS by the end of 2010
- the OS has been designed primarily for connection to the web
