Google (GOOG) Chrome to Surpass Firefox Sooner... or Sooner

Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Chrome is making some big strides, positioning it to become the second-most used Internet browser globally.

According to data from StatCounter, Chrome is expected to take over as most-used web browser worldwide by December.

As of September 28th, Chrome held a 23.6 percent of the global market share for Internet browsers. Comparably, Firefox had 26.8 percent, and Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Internet Explorer retained a 41.7 percent share.

Chrome got to that level with an 8 point gain since January. Assuming the same growth rate, StatCounter sees Chrome at 26.6 percent and Firefox at 25.3 percent of the market by the end of December.

Data from rival metrics company Net Applications has Chrome with just a 15.5 percent share to Firefox's 22.6 percent. Despite the wider gap, Net Applications sees Chrome surpassing Firefox somewhere in the middle of 2012.

It's not clear whether the data include mobile browsers, or are just taking metrics from desktop PCs and notebooks.

Google is trading 1.5 percent lower Friday afternoon.
