Think the patent wars are cooling off? Not even close. And Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) may have just gotten a little more ammo.
According to reports Wednesday, Google is said to have gotten 217 new patents from International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM).
The only thing known about the acquisition by Google is the names of the patents, according to a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office filing.
Google actually got 188 granted patents and 29 published pending patent apps from IBM during the last week of 2011, with an execution date of December 28, 2011.
According to tech blog "SEO by the Sea," the patents cover a broad range of areas like: "presentation software, blade servers, data caching, server load balancing, network performance, video conferencing, email administration, and instant messaging applications."
Although this is just an estimate, based on the $4.5 billion deal to acquire 6,000 Nortel patents by a group of investors in 2011, that's about $750,000 per patent, or $162.75 million for Google. Again, pricing depends on patent quality and usefulness.
Shares of Google are down slightly, while IBM is flat Wednesday morning.
