Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android mobile OS has overtaken Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS in mobile browsing dominance worldwide.
According to data from StatCounter, Android now claims a 20.6 percent share of the global mobile OS market at the end of August. Android had 18.9 percent share in July. The number places Android in second-place to Nokia's (NYSE: NOK) Symbian, which holds a 31.1 percent position, which fell from 32.5 percent in July.
Apple's iOS fell from about 20 percent flat in July.
The numbers are different if you look at data from NetMarketshare. That data has iOS with a 44.34 percent market share worldwide, down from 46.1 percent in July. Android boasts only a 9.2 percent share, from 10.3 percent the prior month, while Symbian held firm at 8.84 percent. Research In Motion's (Nasdaq: RIMM) BlackBerry maintained its 3.67 percent share.
So who is right, and who is wrong? The numbers appear drastically different, so it's hard to judge. NetMarketshare does include tablets with its mobile readings, possibly skewing numbers in Apple's favor as iPads continue to fly off the shelf.
