Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) looks to be taking over another important user segment: the web browser. According to data from TechCruch, Google's Chrome web browser has surpassed Mozilla's Firefox as the most-used browser to access their web page.
The number was a slim margin: 27.80% versus 27.67%, but its an important first step for Google.
Chrome unseats Firefox, which was largely the most used browser over the last four-years. Notably, Chrome recently celebrated its second birthday in September.
The move may not hold for long, as Mozilla is expected to release the fourth iteration of their browser sometime in early 2011, which will bring features such as Panorama (a new way to organize tabs) and a social network add-on (to quickly share ideas and pages with friends, and enemies!).
Additionally, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is set to release their new IE9, which may be more adaptable to internet standards, according to TechCruch.
The browser top-four is as follows:
The feat underlays Google's ability to move beyond just being a pretty homepage that many use to launch themselves into the web-o-sphere, and into more accessible and used devices, such as web browsers and mobile phones. Google's Android operating system for smartphones is making a run up the charts, with 21.4% of subscribers through the third quarter, breathing down Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) neck, but still a ways-off from Research in Motion's (Nasdaq: RIMM) dominant 37.3% share.
Notably, the increase from the second quarter was 6.5 percentage points, the largest gain compared to any of the other companies.
