Goldman Sachs Enters ETF Game

December 28, 2009 12:17 PM EST
Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) recently filed a registration with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to begin to sell exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The ETFs will be sold by a separate entity from Goldman itself.

According to the filing, their first fund will "offer an extensive representation of the Brazilian, Indian, Chinese and Korean markets by targeting all companies with a market capitalization within the top 85% of their investable equity universe." Goldman estimates that the ETF will consist of approximately 350 to 400 companies.

The move from Goldman follows a recent move by Charles Schwab (Nasdaq: SCHW) to offer their own ETFs which will allow commission-free trading with a Schwab account.

While this is Goldman's first time to launch an ETF independently, Goldman currently has a joint venture with Morgan Stanley on Source ETFs in Europe.
