General Motors (NYSE: GM) reports it will begin taking orders for the 2012 Chevrolet Volt in all 50 states starting Friday.
Last year's Motor Trend Car of the Year will now retail for just under $40,000 -- about $1,000 below the 2011 base model.
Previously, the Volt was available in just seven states and Washington D.C.
GM notes "the Volt will be available in two additional interior accents (white and spiced red) and two new exterior colors (Summit White and Blue Topaz Metallic)."
GM's announcement follows a press release from Ford Motor (NYSE: F) Thursday saying it is planning to ramp-up production of Volt competitor, the C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid.
