The upcoming Volt electric car from General Motors Chevrolet brand will team with OnStar to bring consumers a smartphone application allowing drivers to have 24/7 access to the cars functionality.

The smartphone application will be available for Google Inc.'s (NASDAQ: GOOG) and Motorola Inc.'s (NYSE: MOT) Droid, the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone and RIM's (NASDAQ: RIMM) Blackberry Storm, will provide users real-time data connections to the car as well as remote access to car functions like door locks from anywhere, and the ability to track the Volt’s charging functions.

The application is being worked on to become adaptable to those user with internet ready smartphone and a beta demo of the application is available at OnStar's website. The application will debut in late 2010 when the first Volt is ready to roll off the line and onto the streets.

Despite a small hiccup in the demonstration for the application, the programs seem to give the user a futuristic control over the Volt’s new era functions.
