GM (GM) Becomes World's Biggest Automaker After 3-Year Hiatus

January 20, 2012 8:36 AM EST
There it goes! There goes G-M-er, it's a demon on wheels!

According to data this week, General Motors (NYSE: GM) has regained the top-spot as the world's pre-eminent automaker, beating out rivals Toyota (NYSE: TM) and Volkswagen. The spot was reclaimed after losing it to Toyota in 2008.

GM moved 9.03 million vehicles last year, according to the Detroit-based company. The number compares with 8.16 million in sales by Volkswagen, and an estimated 7.91 million by Toyota.

Of course, rivals are claiming they don't count affiliates where majority stakes are held. Volkswagen in particular said it didn't count is stakes in MAN AB and Scania AB, which might have added 200,000 to sales (note: VW sales would still fall short).

Ford Motor (NYSE: F) didn't disclose sales yet, but it reported moving 5.3 million units in 2010, so sales might move to the mid- to upper-5 million unit range.

Shares of all automakers are indicated lower early Friday.
