First U.S.-Based Bitcoin ATM Opening This Week
The first Bitcoin ATM is coming to the U.S.
According to TechCrunch, Robocoin will be turning on the first U.S.-based Bitcoin ATM on February 20th at 2pm CST (3pm EST). The machine is located at a tavern in Austin, Texas.
Robocoin said it already has machines in Vancouver and has shipped to Seattle, Wash., parts of Asia, and Alberta, Canada.
Users will be able to enroll via a government ID or by biometric data, which the Robocoin foundar said
Those wanting a Bitcoin ATM on their business premises will need to obtain a Money Transmitter License (MTL) or register as a Money Service Business (MSB).
Given Bitcoin's rise in popularity over the last few months, we're not sure how this is only the first Bitcoin ATM to operate in the U.S. Manufacturers and those selling the ATMs probably wanted to ensure that the virtual currency would stick around before sinking a fortune into expansion.
Bitcoin last ticked through at about $625, down from levels above $800 seen earlier in the month.
