Is Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) taking a hit from an unusual place today?
According to a briefing at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Nintendo is launching what would appear to be a competitor to Facebook. Or maybe Zynga (Nasdaq: ZNGA), too.
Nintendo debuted Miiverse today, which is like a gathering place for your Mii character on the Wii. The characters can communicate with each other via text message, or use a stylus to draw a picture. Miis will gather around games to show which ones are the most popular, possibly a key feature in future buying decisions.
One of the more interesting points is that you'll be able to check on updates from beyond just the Wii, to a 3DS, tablet, or smartphone. Specifics on which devices/platforms will be included weren't given.
Overall, it's certainly not a Facebook killer, but it gives a glimpse into what challenges might lie ahead of Facebook. Of course, many folks may not be as intrigued by the second coming of Wii as they were the first time around, but there will still be a core audience Nintendo will be able to work with.
Facebook shares are down 3 percent on the session Tuesday.
