Edmunds released its seasonally adjusted annual rate estimate for US auto sales in June Wednesday, at the same time reiterating its full year target of 12.9 million.

The auto research firm sees car sales running at a 12.3 million rate this month, suggesting sales will pick up later in the year. Edmunds expects 2011 sales to peak in September at an annual rate of 13.7 million units.

Edmunds predicts US auto sales will rise to 13.9 million next year and to 15.85 million by 2015, implying growth of about 23 percent.

With the price of gas certainly weighing on consumers so far this year, Edmunds sees the sale of hybrid vehicles making up about 2.7 percent of total U.S. auto sales. The firm expects this number to rise to 3.9 percent of total sales by 2015.
