Mere weeks after announcing their launch in the Great White North, first data from Sandvine shows that Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) seems to have taken over Canadian households. NFLX has a 20% occupation of all U.S. downstream traffic during peak times in the U.S., which is impressive, but they account for 95% of all bandwidth in Canada during peak evening hours.
They make two points, that peak hours were around 9:30pm [we're assuming EDT], and nowhere near that high throughout the rest of the day. The sample from Sandvine was also taken from the first week of Netflix availability in Canada, which may contain a little excitement boost.
ZDNet notes that the movement from cable to services like Netflix and Hulu is strong. With the exception of sports and local programming, consumers can get the same services for one-tenth of the price of traditional cable packages. The movement is also a double whammy for service providers, as they are "not only are they losing revenue to these over-the-top offerings, but they are losing network capacity delivering these services."
