DisplaySearch.com Boosts Outlook for LCD TV Shipments in 2010

December 29, 2009 2:14 PM EST
DisplaySearch.com, an NPD Group Company, recently released their outlook for LCD TV shipments for 2010. The firm raised their LCD worldwide shipments estimate to 140.5 million units based on a positive outlook in China and improved markets in Western Europe and North America. Although just about every region received an increased outlook, revenues for LCD TV's are expected to rise only about 1% Y/Y due to pricing pressure.

For 2010, DisplaySearch sees 171 million units shipping worldwide, representing a 22% increase over 2009 levels. The firm sees most of the growth coming in smaller screen sizes -- those 40 inches and below -- and also sees moderate growth in larger screen sizes.

Due to an increase in demand, LED LCD TV's will also see growth in 2010, though the prices should be higher for this newer technology TV set. The firm believes that the price premiums will be viewed as acceptable by consumers.

High frame-rate LCD TV's will also be tracked by DisplaySearch. The 100/120 Hz frame rate models will account for 26% of LCD TV revenues worldwide in 2009, while 200/240 Hz will take about 5% of revenues. By 2013, 100/120 Hz will account for 31% of LCD TV revenues, while 200/240 Hz will account for nearly 20%.

The market-research company's '10 estimates for shipments of CRT units were lowered to 32 million units given a declining supply of components and demand for the products. Plasma TV's are expected to be slightly more in demand and shipments are expected to be 14.6 million units. Demand will be focused in China, where some new local factories will come online.

Prices of all TV technologies are expected to fall by 9% in 2009, and lessen in 2010.
