Dish (DISH) CEO: Anything Verizon Can Do, We Can Do Better

December 12, 2011 3:32 PM EST
Dish Network's (Nasdaq: DISH) chief executive officer Joseph Clayton reported the company is in the process of developing an online TV service in an effort to expand its competition with cable companies.

Mr. Clayton commented, "If Verizon can do it, why can't we?," following rumors that Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) will offer an online video service in areas where its FiOS TV is unavailable, reports Bloomberg.

Dish is the second largest U.S. satellite-TV provider and hopes to make its way up to first. The company purchased Blockbuster after the company filed for chapter 11 back in April. Dish now offers an online film service through the Blockbuster name and looks to expand its offerings as time goes on.

Dish may have their work cut out for them if today's rumors prove true. Earlier in the day, there was a Wall Street rumor going around that Verizon would target Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) in a takeover. Shares of Netflix are up over 6 percent on today's speculation.
